Novel Response Model : Tracing Threads

Explain your view on the issues raised in the book. Do you agree, disagree or partially agree with the author? Give at least three reasons you believe as you do.

Booker T. Washington dedicated his life to helping others. He believed that "the one thing that is worth living for - and dying for, if need be - is the opportunity of making some one else more happy and useful." (p.104) In some way, I do agree with him. Whenever I help my friends and know they are happy, then it makes me happy and leave me with a good feeling. Life cannot be merely about living a life on a person's own. It is also about working together to help others and make life a little better for everyone.

He also believed that "the time to test a true gentleman is to observe him when he is in contact with individuals of a race that is less fortunate than this own. This is illustrated in no better way than by observing the conduct of the old-school type of southern gentleman when he is in contact with his former slaves or their descendants." (p.49) I agree with this very much, especially the time after the Civil War. People are judged by the way they treat others, because it shows their character and the way they can "look down on others."
