Class Management
This is a core class required for high school graduation. The subject is an academic one and though we can have fun learning, it is mainly a serious business. I will manage the class with this in mind and will focus my and student's attention on the subject and assignments at hand. No other business is as important as learning. Following simple guidelines will make our objective easier to reach.
1. Enter class on time, prepared with materials (a 1 1/2" 3-ring binder,
pen or pencil, text book, good attitude), and ready yourself to pay attention.
Borrowing is discouraged.
2. Pick up hand outs as available on the way in. Have homework ready for pick
up at the start of class.
3. Please, always raise your hand to be recognized.
4. Refrain from speaking out of turn or shouting out answers. Wait for the
thinking period and to be called on..
5. Keep side conversations on the class topic and as short as possible and
end them when others are addressing the class.
6. Follow the teacher's instructions even if you disagree with them and discuss
problems at an appropriate time.
7. Keep working until the bell rings. No one may leave his/her seat until
the class is dismissed by the teacher.
8. Be kind and courteous, and do everything you can to engender respect and
consideration between teacher, yourself and classmates.
FIELD TRIPS: Learning experiences away from school are an important part of high school and are encouraged but restricted in number. Only two absences for field trips are allowed in this class. Extended field trips, those taking more than two consectutive days will disrupt the continuity of learning in either AP or English III studies and will be approved only with thorough consideration and a conversation with the parent. Work due during your absence on any field trip is due BEFORE you leave and will only be credited if submitted at that time. If you ask for time away for more than two days of class, it is assumed that you are commited to returning on the first day after the trip. Staying up late on a field trip and being too tired to attend school is not a legitmate excuse but is poor management. Work missed in this way cannot be made up. If you miss an oral presenetation, seminar or group work because you were on a field trip, the participation credit cannot be made up.
Applying for permission to attend a field trip must be done no less than one week in advance. The field trip form must be submitted one day and retrieved the next. No approvals will be issued "on the spot."
In NO CASE will a field trip be approved for a student who has earned lower than a C in the previous marking period or who has submitted fewer that 90% of the required work in the then current marking period.
PROHIBITIONS: You may not
a. Bring food or drink into class at any time. On hot days (77+ in the room)
water is allowed.
b. Show or use electronic devices in class at any time. ### (see below)
c. Leave the room without permission.
d. Leave the room before 15 minutes has elapsed or with only 15 minutes remaining.
e. Touch another student in class even with his/her permission.
f. Take or destroy property of any kind in class.
g. Look at another's test paper, give or receive answers (right or wrong)
during a test, or cheat in any manner whatsoever at any time in or out of
class. Discussing test material with students in following classes (e.g. you
are in 3rd, he/she is in 5th) is CHEATING and will result, as in other cases
of cheating, in a zero for both students or for all student involved.
SPECIAL MENTION: Copying information from another's paper to your paper regardless of the subject in this class is considered cheating. It must not be done. If discovered during or after the act, BOTH papers will be destroyed and the subject teacher will be notified. If the copying is done for this class's work, a minus grade will be given for the assignment and the papers will be destroyed.
DISCIPLINE: (Does not include cheating which carries its own penalties as
previously explained).
1st infraction - friendly reminder
2nd infraction - pointed private reminder with explanation of behavior examined.
3rd infraction - call the parent
4th infraction - call the parent and assign the student to after school campus
beautification
5th infraction - suspend student from class for two days. Meet with parent
and assign the student to two days after school campus beautification
6th infraction - recommend removal of student from class and/or suspension
from school.
### Speical note on discipline and electronic devices: If you show or use electronic devices in the classroom AT ANY TIME (includes any time you are at or through the door, even after school) the device must be surrenderd to the class lock box for retrevial after class at the teacher's descretion.. If you fail to do this, security will remove you and the device from the room and the parent will be called. Electronics will be returned at the end of the day between 3:06 and 3:11 or later if the teacher stays beyond 3:11. Repeated offences will result in 5th and 6th infraction action above.
