Block Quotation

 

If you must quote a long passage, a practice you should studiously avoid - use short quotations instead, you

then need to "block quote" that long passage. In the double spaced main text the orthography looks like this,

when we go to block quotation we single space and push the margins in on both sides. Remember, no

quotation marks are needed in a block quotation like the following one:

The city's assessed valuation grew 8.0% in fiscal 2003, capping a five-year run that averaged 7.2% annual growth. For at least the second year in a row, property tax receipts and real estate transfer thxes have considerably exceeded budgeted levels and offset other areas of revenue weakness and expenditure growth.

Note that a double space is inserted before and after the block quote. I prefer both margins, right and left, be

justified to make the text look even trimmer.
