English 6th Marking Period Overview

Reading: Read Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. We will read some in class and act out parts for a dramatic final. There will be quizzes and tests on the play. (150 points)

Web Quest on The Crucible and The House UnAmerican Activities Committee (McCarthyism) (70 – 100 pts)

Research Paper: Write a research paper on any topic of your choosing doing the following (200 pts):

Select a topic

Narrow the topic down through a 5 step process

Find a book, a newspaper article, a magazine article, an encyclopedia article and an internet article on your topic.

Read all the above materials.

Compose a bibliography listing the above materials.

Write a paper fully discussing the findings your research has illuminated using quotations and paraphrases of your sources AND your own ideas about the topic as well as the ideas the reading material has brought to you. Properly cite the sources you quote and paraphrase. Your objective should be to fully illustrate to your reader what you have encountered and learned in your research. Length will be determined by how much you have to say; quotations and paraphrase should represent no more than 25 to 33 % of the length of the text. Your effort at organizing thought and material and your commentary on the reading and ideas you encounter will occupy the balance of the space. Most papers will run 3 to 5 pages of double spaced, typewritten text. DO NOT include a title page, table of contents or spacer pages. Use 12 point font exclusively. No handwritten papers are acceptable. The bibliography is due May 16th. The paper is due May 23rd. No late papers will be read or graded, so prepare for the worst possibilities to get your work in on time.

Some class time will be allowed to work on the project. Some tutoring time will be available to help you get the project done.

Class CD project – We must complete the project through “distribution.” The weight of the project will be placed on two important evaluations: The student’s individual contribution as evidenced by the essay as published and the student’s group participation as evidenced by the group leader’s and managing editors evaluation. (200 pts).

Final Exam: This final will include questions on the readings in the literature text book and in-class reading books we have read. Vocabulary will be included. I would recommend just paging through the notes, assignments and tables of contents of these books to refresh the memory. Certainly, if you have not read the pieces you should do so before the exam.
