Sentence variety:

1. Count each word other than the articles "a," "an," and "the" and short prepositions "of," "to," "in," "on," and the like.

List the number of words in each sentence. Compare the lengths. Judge the variety.

2. Copy the first four words of each sentence, one below the other in list form.

Compare the beginnings. Judge the variety. Are transitions and "tie-back" word present?

3. Examine the structure of the sentences in your essay by listing the type of sentence next to its length found in number one. Choices are

simple

complex
fragment
run-on.

If you doubt your ability to identify these, work with a study buddy and/or consult our handbook or the teacher.

4. Examine the beginning structure of your sentences. HOW do they begin? The choices are that they begin with the main clause, a time or sequence clause, a long subordinate clause, a transition word, a prepositional phrase?

5. Examine point of view used in each essay. Have you used 1st person, 2nd person or 3rd person? Have you been consistent or have you mixed points of view in the essay?

6. Note the verb usage. In the first ten sentences count a) the action verbs and b) the "to be" verbs. What is the ratio of action to "to be" verbs?

7. After compiling this information and examining the implications of your style, write a letter to Mr. J, explaining what you have found out about your style and what plans you have for changing your style. Keep a copy of the forms for your December revisions.
