Debate "Rubric"
What to look for in the debate in class:
Clear evidence of preparation: Does the debator know his/her speech? Does the speech conform to time limits? Does the debator use reference to "expert" sources?
Clear evidence of practice: Does the debator deliver a speech rather than read one? Does the debator appear at ease? Does the debator emphasize important points? Does the debator speak clearly, not too rapidly and with a high degree of correctness?
Specific Speeches:
Opening remarks: Does the speaker emphasize the main points of his side of the argument? Does the speaker deliver a "global" quotation? Is the speech one minute or slightly more?
Constructive speech: Does the speaker deliver the main points and support each with clear, relevant argument and information? Does the speaker note the sources of the information and, if needed, the arguments? Does the speaker use "segun" technique? Is the speech three minutes or slightly more.
Rebuttal: Does the speaker direct his/her remarks to the OPPOSING ARGUMENTS? Is the rebuttal a clear statement disproving or dissuading the audience from the OPPOSING POSITION? Does the speaker avoid ad hominem arguements? Does the speaker wisely use the two minutes allowed?
Closing remarks: Does the speaker review the main points of his side of the argument? Does the speaker deliver a "global" quotation? Is the speech one minute or slightly more?
Comment on the ethos of the speakers. Comment on emotional appeals. Comment on logic used. Comment on particularly adept use of diction which persuades. Comment on the rhetorical, persuasive techniques used by each side.
