Homework:
Monday - Explore your DEBATE topic. Print general background articles on your topic for sharing with your group. Two are required in class tomorrow for stamping.
Tuesday - Continue to obtain articles on your narrowed DEBATE topic. Also, read William F. Buckley, Why We Don't Complain, p. 97 of 50 Essays. Write 150 words MINIMUM explaining what the causes and effects are surrounding this article - expand your thinking beyond the immediate question Buckley poses ( why don't we complain).
Wednesday - Continue to obtain articles on your narrowed DEBATE topic. Read Brent Staples, Black Men in Public Places, p. 404 of 50 Essays. Write 200 words MINIMUM explaining what the causes and effects are surrounding this article - expand your thinking beyond the immediate question Staples poses ( the effect of Black men in public places). Several causes and several effects should be apparent.
Thursday - Continue to obtain articles on your narrowed DEBATE topic. Read Susan Bordo, Never Just Pictures, p. 85 of 50 Essays. Write 300 words MINIMUM explaining what the causes and effects are surrounding this article - expand your thinking beyond the immediate question Bordo poses AND turn the spotlight on your debate topic - what causes and effects have bearing on your topic. .
Friday - . Prepare DEBATE position statements, final proposition, argument papers and outlines for each speech you and your partner will give. These should all be typewritten and available for stamping on Monday, March 22. We start debating in a few days.
Readings: Buckley, Staples, and Bordo AND articles on your argumentative, debate topic.
Writing: Write IN 50 MINUTES an AP style prompt. (Thursday)
In class: Monday - Review Vocabulary test, M/C reading and questions, preliminary review of Okeefenokee prompt.
Tuesday - Each class will do a read-around on the NEA synthesis prompt. Results from readers will be distributed (25 minutes maximum); Debate groups meet on the topic to share background materials. Artilces will be date stamped. Start making some decisions in the group about your topic. Narrow the focus to a debate-able topic which will allow SPECIFIC arguments and EVIDENCE. Craft a resolution for submital at the end of class - one from each group.
Wednesday - Review Okeefenokee prompt in detail. Look at another prompt from a recent test.
Thursday - Write a timed essay - style, rhetoric or argument.
Friday - Vocabulary and language history introduces the new words for Monday. Debate groups work on arguments, evidence and crafting speeches.
