2nd week: February 16-21

I can identify and use rhetorical strategies.

I can identify main ideas and write about their use.
I can read, think and organize my thought on a topic quickly and efficiently to support my performance on a timed AP writing assignment.

Homework:

Monday - 1st period: finish reading OUR TOWN. 2nd period: finish reading THE CHILDREN'S HOUR 3rd, 5th and 6th periods: finish reading Mike Royko and Molly Ivins; catalogue "facetious" words and phrases.

Tuesday - Read Scott Russell Sanders's The Inheritance of Tools in 50 Essays.

Wednesday - Read Sarah Vowell, Shooting Dad in 50 Essays.

Thursday - Analyze M/C responses as requried: 1st pass accuracy, 2nd pass accuracy; type accuracy by each catagorey and division (a possiblity of 15 or so types).

Friday - 1st and 2nd periods - Mike Royko from the hand-out and Molly Ivins in Norton. Catalog each word and phrase which the writers use "facetiously." 3rd and 6th: Read The Children's Hour for Monday. 5th period - read: Sherman Alexie's The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me in 50 Essays.

Writing: For The Inheritance of Tools and Shooting Dad in 50 Essays write a structural analysis in 50 words for each essay; then, in complete sentence(s) state what the main idea of each essay is. Finally, note, in seveal complete sentences what the rhetorical strategy the author uses to achieve his/her purpose. Write reading responses for the given readings. (Tuesday, Wednesday) Write a narative analysis, in addition to presenting the calculations required, for the Multiple Choice practice(Thursday). Write a timed AP prompt in class using your best style, rhetorical strategt and organizational ideas (Friday). 5th period will write the following for The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me: write a structural analysis in 50 words the essay; then, in complete sentence(s) state what the main idea of each essay is. Finally, note, in seveal complete sentences what the rhetorical strategy the author uses to achieve his purpose.

In class: Monday - President's Day, no class meeting.

Tuesday - 1st: seminar on Our Town. 2nd seminar on The Children's Hour. 3rd, 5th and 6th discussion of Royko and Ivins in seminar format. VOCABULARY QUIZ expires 5th passing bell TODAY!

Wednesday - Vocabulary given. Etymology practica.

Thursday - M/C practice all period.

Friday - Timed writing.

Vocabulary The 2nf list for the marking period; emphasis on ETYMOLOGY. 1st Quiz period ends passing bell to 5th period Tuesday. Next deadline is Wednesday, February 24th, again 5th passing bell.
