Homework: Read three pieces to practice identifying tone, identifying audience/strategy/purpose and technique.
Readings: In order, one per night -Jamaica Kincaid's "The Ugly Tourist" in NORTON (Monday), Zora Neale Hurston's "How it Feels to Be Colored Me" in 50 ESSAYS, (Wednesday), and Eric Lui's "Notes on a Native Speaker" in 50 ESSAYS. (Thursday) NO READING TUESDAY NIGHT - USE THE TIME TO STUDY VOCABULARY.
Writing: After reading each essay, check the " tone words" list on our class page. Find five tone words on the list that describe the tone or tones used by the writer in his/her piece. Thenk catalog three strategies used by the writer, who her audience might be, and what his purpose in writing is.
In class: Groups will debate on Monday in 2nd and 5th periods. All others will discuss "Women's Brains" and Adrienne Rich's piece. Tuesday- Discuss Kincaid; review Postman results and view Lapham direction.. Wednesday - Lapham timed write. Thursday - Debrief on timed write, discuss Hurston/ tone and rhetoric. Firday - Discuss Lui and the Mandala project.
Vocabulary Review of the exam. New words are due MONDAY next week. NOTE: Each class MUST achieve at least an 80% participation and success ratio on the quizz due Monday, November 2nd if Mr. Jollymore is to continue to give definitions each Monday.
Quizzes: A scantron quiz on words from the board and October Words of the Day Thursday or Friday.
Testing: Thrusday or Friday - 10 words from 'on the board' and 10 Words of the Day.
