4th Week - September 21 through 27

Homework: Writing responses to Peter Singer (50 Essays), Asimov, Gould, Bird and Fussell in Norton. . Skeletal work on argumentative essay.

Readings: Read junior project reading response emailed to students last week.In 50 Essays read Peter Singer's "Animal Liberation." In The Norton Reader read Asimov's "The Eureka Phenominon," Stephen Jay Gould's "Darwin's Middle Road," Bird's "College is a Waste of Time and Money," and Paul Fussell's "Thank God for the Atomic Bomb." Those completing the MAKEUP summer assignment should be reading The New York Times this week.

Writing: The following are ALL formal assignments to be turned in the day following assignment.

Singer - Evaluate Cohen's and Hearne's criticisms of Singer in paragraph format. Is each justified in his or her attacks? Mount a defense of Singer in the face of these critics.

Asimov - Track and note his examples - summarize three of them - characterize them.

Gould - Evaluate the strenghts of Gould arguments vis a vis Asimov. Tell which is the more reasonable, accurate, and which is the more convincing, persuasive. Characterize how each builds the integrity of his argument.

Bird - Evaluate the strength of her argument. Where is it weak? Why? Mount a counter argument to one of her main points (write in paragraph form).

Fussell - Outline each step of his argument. In a paragraph, apply Fussell's philosophy to the modern day dilemma of North Korea or Iran from the US point of view.

In class prewriting of argumentative essay.

Vocabulary posted in class (20 words) - quiz by next Wednesday.

Quizzes: vocabulary as usual and a sample quiz FOR CREDIT on the "words on the board."

In Class:

Discussion of the four argumentative readings - 15 minutes each.

Presentation and discussion of JP response form; forming a position on animal treatment, writing a first paragraph, writing a body paragraph, writing a conclusion; "What is an AP prompt like?"
