First Week - August 31 through September 7

Activity::
General orientation:: Review course objectives, scope and reqirements. Establish class rules. Establish grading policy. Establish tardy and absence policy. Obtain Norton Reader and supplementry texts. Learn names.

Introduce rhetorical analysis, reading and writing rhetorically.

Readings: Course outlines and requirements on line; Jeremy Rifkin hand out; from a UC study of professorial expectations of entering freshmen; definition of ethos, pathos and logos; selections from 50 Essays and/or Norton Reader.

Writing: a timed write on the summer assignment material or college expectations; reading reflections on the ethos, pathos and logos piece; reading reflections on Rifkin.

Vocabulary posted in class (20 words) - quiz by next Wednesday.

Quizzes: A quiz on the meaning and application of rhetoric. Friday.
